Dawkins DNA Project
Latest News and Information - 12 Dec 2008

Welcome to the Dawkins DNA Project.
We have 19 participants who have joined the project and 17 who have tested their dna. Testing can prove or disprove connections between Dawkins branches or Dawkins families in the same area. We know from those who have participated so far that not all Dawkins in the UK are connected. However we have had some success with the Dawkins in the USA a number of whom appear to have descended from the same ancestor. But they have not found a connection back to the UK at this moment. Don't forget to visit the largest resource of Dawkins family information at Dawkins Genealogy

The Dawkins Surname
According to "The Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames" Dawkins means 'Little David' from Dawe plus kin presumably from Old English. The earliest recorded name is Willelmus filius Daukyn (William, son of Daukyn) in 1332 from the Subsidy Rolls of Lancashire. Then a William Daukyn in the 13th Centruy in the Coucher Book or Chartulary of Whalley Abbey near Blackburn, Lancashire. Richard Daukyns is recorded in 1354 in the Assize Rolls of Staffordshire. Magister Dr Dawkyns recorded in 1534 in the Registers of the Guild of Corpus Christi in the City of York, identical to John Dakyn LL.D., vicar-general of York. The earliest Essex mention is from the Session Rolls of Essex dated Jan 1585 of John & William Dawkyn of Finchingfield.
Who can join
The Project is open to anyone who is researching the Dawkins surname or variant regardless of which country you originate or live in.

Participants will need to supply a sample of their yDNA. This can only be supplied by a male Dawkins. Female researchers will need to get a male Dawkins to supply a sample.

To join the project go here if you have any questions take a look at the FAQs. You can also contact me by clicking the contact link at the bottom of the page.

If you've already tested with another company, (such as Ancestry, Trace Genetics, Roots for Real, Relative Genetics, Oxford Ancestors, GeoGene, Gene Tree, DNAPrint Genomics, DNAHeritage, African Ancestry, etc) you should upload your results to the YSearch database. Due to quality assurance concerns, I cannot add you to the Dawkins Surname DNA Project based on DNA test results from a company other than Family Tree DNA unless you purchase a conversion kit.

Dawkins DNA was created and is maintained by Phil Dawkins. Site last updated on 11 December, 2008
